B.A. English, 2006
Haley Zelenka’s time at Mississippi State University is marked by both academic growth and formative campus involvement, including her work as an orientation leader. That experience, paired with her English studies in the College of Arts & Sciences, helped shape a successful legal career built on service and communication.
Her academic and professional experiences—including a U.S. Senate internship—expanded her perspective and helped clarify her career direction.
“Together, these experiences positioned me exactly where I wanted to be, giving me the direction, opportunities and confidence to pursue the work I love,” she said.
One of her most meaningful MSU experiences was serving as an orientation leader, where she helped welcome new students to campus.
“There was something incredibly special about welcoming new students, hearing their stories and sharing a place that holds such a deep place in my heart. Every session reminded me why MSU meant so much to me––the community, the energy, the sense of belonging. Being able to help students take their first steps on a campus that had already shaped me in so many ways felt like a full-circle moment.”
Within the English department, Zelenka credits faculty mentorship—especially Dr. Kelly March—as central to her development as a student and writer.
“Her guidance helped me understand not just literature, but myself. She created an environment where I felt both challenged and supported, and that combination changed everything for me. I still cherish the final portfolio I created as an English major; it’s a tangible reminder of the work I did and the ways the English department helped me learn to express myself with honesty and intention.”
After graduating from MSU, Zelenka attended law school and began her legal career in domestic law, working with families. She later moved into healthcare leadership and now serves as Chief Legal Officer at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport.
Her career reflects a consistent commitment to service and community impact.
“I wake up each morning knowing I have real opportunities to make a difference in someone’s life, and that sense of purpose is the most rewarding part of my career. My College of Arts & Sciences education gave me the grounding to move through complex challenges with confidence, and the writing and communication skills I developed there continue to shape every step of my professional journey.”
Outside of her professional life, Zelenka enjoys spending time with her daughter, Sarah, and staying connected to her church community.
Her advice to current MSU students can be summed up in one word: impactful.
“Savor every moment! The ordinary days, the big milestones, and everything in between will influence your life. Remain deeply grateful for your time there, and take every opportunity to be involved, to serve and to fully immerse yourself in a culture and community that is truly unlike any other,” she said.
