“I honestly don’t think I chose MSU—I believe MSU chose me.”

Marleisha “Mar” Kyles originally planned to attend the University of Mississippi, but limited scholarship opportunities led her to consider another option. After being encouraged to apply to Mississippi State University, Kyles received a full music scholarship from then-choir director Dr. Leslie.

“The rest is history! Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Kyles says.

More than a decade later, Mississippi State continues to be a significant part of Kyles’ story. Today, she works full time as an athletic academic counselor while pursuing her third degree from the university—a doctorate in higher education leadership.

For Kyles, the most meaningful part of her time at Mississippi State has been the opportunity to help students reach their own goals.

“One of my fondest memories at MSU is seeing a student graduate after watching them work hard toward reaching that goal,” she says. “It’s a feeling that never gets old, and it’s always an honor to see students accomplish the goals they’ve worked so hard for.”

Her commitment to students was shaped in part by retired College of Business adviser Vergie Bash, whom Kyles credits with making a lasting difference in her own college experience.

“She helped guide me toward graduation and showed me the importance of building meaningful relationships with students,” Kyles says. “Her impact inspires me to pay it forward in my current role, and I’ll always be grateful for the support she gave me.”

Looking back, Kyles sees a connection between each chapter of her Mississippi State experience.

“I’d say every job opportunity I’ve had at MSU has connected like puzzle pieces, each one preparing me for the next and ultimately leading me to where I am today. I’m incredibly grateful for the journey,” she says.

That journey began in the College of Arts & Sciences, where Kyles earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. 

“CAS has played a tremendous role in my journey, from my bachelor’s and master’s degrees to now pursuing my doctorate,” Kyles says. “The professors, knowledge and insight have helped shape who I am today, and I’m truly grateful.”

Between her work with student-athletes and her doctoral studies, Kyles remains deeply connected to Mississippi State. Away from campus, she enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephews and serving her church in Starkville.

Her experiences at Mississippi State have shaped both her personal and professional life, and she encourages current students to make the most of their own time at the university.

“Take advantage of every opportunity, build relationships, and don’t be afraid to ask for help,” she says. “Trust the process and keep moving forward.”
