70th Anniversary Message

From the Dean

One of the curious facts for me is that while the university was established in 1878, it was 1956 before the College of Arts & Sciences at Mississippi State University was established as a unique entity. Of course, what really makes us unique is our ubiquity. The academic training and intellectual values of Arts & Sciences have always been at the heart of the university’s mission to discover, learn and serve. Since our founding in 1956, we have shaped generations of thinkers, scientists, educators, artists and leaders whose work reaches far beyond our campus.

Arts & Sciences is foundational to Mississippi State’s impact. We are one college with extraordinary breadth, encompassing 14 departments, 27 majors and thousands of students who form the intellectual core of the university. From groundbreaking scientific research to creative expression, from understanding human behavior to studying the forces that shape our world, the work of Arts & Sciences advances knowledge and improves lives.

As part of our 70th anniversary celebration, we are proud to share 70 stories that highlight the many paths our graduates have taken and the lasting influence of an Arts & Sciences education. I invite you to explore these stories, reconnect with the college and celebrate the people who make Arts & Sciences an enduring force at Mississippi State University.
Hail State!

Dr. Rick Travis
Dean, College of Arts & Sciences
