Destany Taylor
B.A. Science in Psychology, 2018
“There are so many reasons I chose Mississippi State University for college. Their psychology program is consistently ranked #1 in Mississippi, and their research department is outstanding, said Destany Taylor, who currently lives in Madison, Miss. “Since I knew I wanted to stay in-state, joining the best program was important to me. The campus itself is vibrant, diverse, and incredibly welcoming—which made the decision even easier. In the end, becoming a Bulldog just made sense.”
One of the most impactful experiences during her time at MSU was the course Psychology of Aging. Throughout the course, Thaggard gained a strong foundation in the aging process as well as an understanding of how aging can differ across genders. The course also granted her the opportunity to participate in a research project which interviewed senior citizens. Having the opportunity to hear their stories firsthand allowed her to develop a deeper, more personal understanding of our aging population. This experience not only shifted Taylor’s perspective but was foundational for shaping the direction that she wanted to take in her career.
When asked if she had a professor, mentor, or class that shaped her path in a lasting way, Taylor said, “I took several psychology classes with Professor Kristin Campbell, and she truly made her mark. The way she taught made things memorable, and her classes were the ones that stayed with me after I graduated. She didn’t just teach psychology—she showed me how it connects to real life, and that understanding has shaped the way I see people and the work I do every day.”
Since her graduation in December 2018, Taylor has had a very successful career and her heart for service and giving back to her community is evident in her work. Her work includes several roles in healthcare and community related jobs such as mental health and IDD services, nursing homes/ assisted living facilities, several Mississippi State agencies and leadership positions. She currently works as a Market Development Representative for Help at Home. “Whether I was working directly with individuals or supporting them behind the scenes, I’ve had the privilege of touching lives and making a meaningful difference along the way,” said Taylor.
Outside of work, Taylor lives a very active life. She is involved in her church, where she serves in the congregation and participates in life groups, she is also involved in an outreach group that allows her to volunteer in the community. She enjoys staying physically active, traveling, and spending time with friends and family, especially when it involves new experiences. Taylor also stays connected with organizations that support both professional and personal development, such as the Miss. Urban League Young Professionals.
Taylor stays connected to her community and MSU by attending football games and stopping by the Cotton District when she is in town. She has also recently had the opportunity to get involved in volunteer opportunities through MSU Central Alumni.
When asked what advice she would give to today’s Mississippi State students, she said, “Enjoy the college experience, talk to everyone, take risks, ask as many questions as you can, and remember—it’s okay to fail. That’s how you grow! Most of all, have fun! You only get the
Bulldog experience once, so make it count. Hail State!”
