Samyak Shertok, a Mississippi State assistant professor of English, is a finalist for the 2026 PEN Open Book Award for his debut poetry collection “No Rhododendron,” published in 2025 by the University of Pittsburgh Press.

“I chose Mississippi State University and the College of Arts & Sciences because of their strong academic reputation, supportive learning environment, and emphasis on critical thinking and interdisciplinary education,” said Breelyn Davenport Thaggard, a 2023 MSU graduate. “The College of Arts & Sciences provided a solid foundation in the sciences while also encouraging intellectual curiosity and professional growth. The resources, mentorship, and diverse coursework within CAS prepared me to succeed in a rigorous graduate program and continue developing as a well-rounded professional.”

Mississippi State University’s College of Arts and Sciences hosted a ribbon cutting on Friday [May 8], for the Hank Johnston Mathematics Center, an expansion of the university’s Math Domain located in Allen Hall. The space, made possible through a gift from 1965 MSU alumnus and Apollo 8 project leader Henry “Hank” Johnston, provides additional dedicated learning space for strengthening student success, retention and confidence in foundational mathematics and statistics coursework.
