“Justin Thornton’s pathogenic microbiology class solidified my passion for pursuing medicine,” said Ty Clardy, a May 2025 Mississippi State graduate, of a professor that shaped his path. “Learning all the different pathogens associated with infectious diseases and how to treat them felt like the closest thing to a course that directly correlates with the practice of medicine. This course also prepared me for the critical thinking necessary to succeed in medical school.”

“The College of Arts and Sciences allowed me to take classes that would be applicable to my future in medicine, and I was able to complete pre-requisite courses for medical school,” said Clardy about his choice to attend MSU and the College of Arts and Sciences for his education.

The College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors organization was pivotal in shaping Clardy’s experience at MSU, he said. “We had a special group of people that truly cared for one another, and we were passionate about our mission to expose incoming freshmen to all the wonderful opportunities the College of Arts and Sciences has to offer. I had the privilege of serving as the president of the College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors my senior year, and it was amazing to give back to the organization that granted me memories for a lifetime,” said Clardy.

After graduating from MSU, Clardy began his path to becoming a physician. He currently is a medical school student at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

“The education provided by the College of Arts and Sciences made it possible for me to turn this dream into a reality. Without studying the basic sciences, I would have no foundation to supplement my current education. Understanding how these complex concepts intercept is crucial to becoming a well-versed physician,” said Clardy when asked how his undergraduate education prepared him for life and a career after graduation.

Clardy’s advice to current Mississippi State students is to “soak in your time at Mississippi State.”

“In the spring and fall, take time to look around and appreciate where you are. Enjoy the little things and never take the beautiful grass for granted.”
