MSU students named finalists in national media awards program

     STARKVILLE, Miss.—More than two dozen Mississippi State University students are national finalists in the National Broadcasting Society annual media competition for university students. Finalists were announced Tuesday, January 26.

     The National Broadcasting Society is a national organization designed to enhance the development of college and university students and entry-level professionals involved in electronic media by providing exposure to the electronic media industries and assistance in career preparation.

     The finalists represent 16 categories—an increase from last year’s finalists in five categories—and tied with Marshall University for second most finalists in the competition, ahead of numerous notable communication-focused programs across the country.

     The national winners will be selected at the 79th Annual NBS Convention March 12-14 in Indianapolis. An online component will be available for those unable to travel.

     The NBS competition included 43 overall categories including radio, TV or web news, websites, commercials, comedy segments and script, music videos and short films, among others.

     “The Department of Communication has had a major initiative to increase its student excellence in national competitions,” said Terry Likes, head of the Department of Communication. “We are proud that the output of faculty and students is recognized at a national level.”

     Likes said the categories represent student work across a variety of disciplines including journalism, public relations, broadcasting, theatre, communication studies and more, including our academic partners at WMSV-FM, The Reflector and the interdisciplinary film minor.

     Collaborating with the communication department for the competition were students from MSU student organizations including the Lab Rats improvisation comedy group, The Scene student film organization and the Broadcast Education Association Student Media Club.

     “The faculty are working hard to provide students wonderful opportunities to showcase their work,” said Likes.
