MSU TV station, students nominated for multiple national production awards

STARKVILLE, Miss.— Mississippi State University’s student-produced weekly newscast, Take 30 News, is a nominee for a national award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Take 30 News received a nomination for Best Newscast from NATAS Southeast Chapter for a Spring 2021 production developed by recent MSU graduates Michelle Martin, producer; Ethan Foster, director; Holly Emery, news desk; Harrison Nix, weather; Logan Brown, sports; and current MSU senior Taylor Vollin, entertainment news.

“This is a great achievement for the students involved with this broadcast,” said Chris Misun, Take 30 advisor and broadcast instructor. “To be recognized by NATAS, the organization behind the Emmys, is a great steppingstone as the students begin their professional careers. They are stacking their resumés and paving a path for their classmates following behind. The continued success that our students are seeing speaks loudly for the broadcast and digital journalism concentration and the Department of Communication as a whole.”

Terry Likes, professor and head of the Department of Communication, said this was the first time for Take 30 News to enter the competition.

“We are thrilled to be one of three nominated,” Likes said. “To be recognized by the same organization that issues Emmy awards to professionals is a great achievement for our students and faculty in the Department of Communication. We also appreciate the efforts of those who support us including MSTV, the library via its Digital Media Center, and the Department of Geosciences.”

Additionally, two MSU broadcast students are finalists in the national Broadcast Education Association On-Location Creative Competition.

Recent graduate Ethan Foster is a finalist in the BEA Student Audio Competition. His work aired on WMSV-FM. Senior Flora Dedeaux is a finalist with two entries in the BEA Student News Competition, which originally aired on Take 30 News.

Winners will be selected October 7-12 during the annual BEA conference, this year held in a virtual format.
