Student Profile: Olivia Murtagh

Olivia Murtagh is a junior chemistry major with an American Chemical Society concentration from New Orleans, Louisiana. Olivia chose MSU because “After touring State, learning about so many opportunities provided to their students, and then finally meeting people in the Chemistry Department, I was sold.” During her time at MSU Olivia has served as vice president of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society, a College of Arts and Sciences Ambassador, as well as, a member of the United Nations Association and the Shackouls Honors College. Olivia said that her SMACS team has been an influential force for her because they are “some of the best, most encouraging, and hard-working people I know at State.” Olivia describes MSU as “family” and her advice to prospective students is to “Get involved. There are so many amazing organizations at State and you will definitely find an organization or club or group that will you will really enjoy and want to be involved with.”

Emerging field of quantum computing advances at MSU through $500K Department of Energy grant

A Mississippi State University research team is using more than half a million dollars from the U.S. Department of Energy nuclear physics program to study the emerging field of quantum computing. The research is part of a 2020 goal set by MSU’s Quantum Task Force to explore interdisciplinary programs for training MSU students in the evolving technology of quantum computing and quantum information science.
