CMLL Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Dr. Rose MacLean
"Slavery, Freedom, and Geographic Mobility in the Roman Empire"-
The Shackouls Honors College and the Cobb Institute of Archeology invite you to join them for a lecture by Dr. Rose MacLean.
Dr. MacLean examines the impact of geographic mobility on the social status and lived experiences of the enslaved and freed people who worked in the Roman imperial bureaucracy, otherwise known as the familia Caesaris. Drawing on a range of literary and epigraphic sources, she argues that mobility - together with wealth and political influence- elevated the prestige of these individuals while simultaneously challenging their ability to form stable families.
Dr. Rose MacLean is Associate Professor of Classics at UC Santa Barbara. She is the author of Freed Slaves and Roman Imperial Culture: Social Integration and the Transformation of Values (Cambridge, 2018).
The lecture will take place April 21st at 4 p.m. in Lee Hall 0003
