Student Profile: Sofia Alvarez

Sofia Alvarez

Sofia Alvarez is a junior political science major with a minor in pre-law and mathematics from Belmont, Mississippi. Sofia said she chose to attend MSU because her parents always envisioned her attending college here at MSU and “I grew up thinking about the opportunities that I could receive once I started at MSU. When I came to tour MSU, I felt like I was at home.” During her time at MSU Sofia has served as the historian and community outreach chair for the Latino Student association, treasurer of the International Student Association, a College of Arts and Sciences Ambassador, and a mentor in the A.M.I.G.O.S program. Sofia is also currently preparing for a study abroad program in England, where she will be studying Shakespeare and meeting with Oxford professors about her specific interests in politics. Sofia said that a fellow student and friend, Marisa Laudadio, has been an influential force for her by helping her find and seize opportunities. Sofia’s advice to incoming or prospective students is to “Get involved….Join organizations that hold interests similar to yours, but also join organizations related to your education path.”
