Mission Statement

“The mission of the Diversity Taskforce of the College of Arts & Sciences at Mississippi State University is to advise the Dean of the College on matters of diversity, to promote diversity in all of its forms and to advocate for a climate of inclusivity and openness. To achieve its mission, the Taskforce will provide the Dean with counsel for the purpose of working to create and maintain an atmosphere of tolerance that enables the expression of intellectual, cultural and political differences within accepted standards of academic freedom, while also discouraging discrimination based upon race, color, religion, gender, sex, ethnicity, nationality, age, disability, genetic information, veteran’s status, sexual orientation or group affiliation.“

Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: Advise the Dean on Matters of Diversity

  • Objective 1:
    Recruit 9 to 12 volunteers, plus a Chair person, to serve on the Taskforce. The Taskforce consists of equal number of representatives of the faculty, staff and students and should reflect to the greatest extent possible the broad diversity of the College.
  • Objective 2
    Meet at minimum three times a semester to discuss pending issues and provide counsel to the Dean.
  • Objective 3
    Identify ways to encourage the participation of diverse groups in college programs in terms of recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students.

Goal 2: Promote and Maintain Atmosphere of Tolerance and Acceptance

  • Objective 1:
    Promote awareness of diversity through facilitating public dialogue on diversity issues, organizing workshops and developing initiatives.
  • Objective 2:
    Work with other units on campus to coordinate the academic resources of faculty, staff and student organizations and individuals in promoting diversity and sharing experiences across the College in dealing with diversity issues.

Goal 3: Support Expression of Intellectual, Cultural, and Political Differences

  • Objective 1:
    Support and defend the accepted standards of academic freedom in accordance with the University operating policy and procedure.
  • Objective 2:
    Encourage critical thinking and open-minded deliberations with the aim of enhancing mutual respect and understanding.

Goal 4: Discourage Discrimination

  • Objective 1:
    Provide a forum for faculty, staff and students to express concerns regarding perceived patterns of prejudice and discrimination.
  • Objective 2:
    Discuss perceived patterns of prejudice and discrimination brought to the attention of the Taskforce and recommend necessary actions for addressing these issues.
